Remembering Matt Hinkin: East Tennessee loses a trusted voice

KNOXVILLE – Former WATE Channel 6 Chief Meteorologist Matt Hinkin, a familiar and trusted presence in East Tennessee homes for more than three decades, died March 16, 2026, in Knoxville. He was 62.

According to his obituary, Hinkin passed away following a 16-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Hinkin spent over 30 years at WATE after joining the station in 1990, becoming one of the region’s most recognized and respected meteorologists. Throughout his career, he guided viewers through major weather events while earning a reputation for accuracy, approachability and a strong connection to the community.
Beyond broadcasting, Hinkin was known for his outreach across East Tennessee, including visits to local schools and involvement in educational segments such as “New at the Zoo.”
He was born September 23, 1963, in Lawton, Oklahoma and later made Knoxville his home, where he became a fixture in the community both on and off the air.
Hinkin retired in August 2021 after publicly sharing his Parkinson’s diagnosis. He faced the illness with resilience and continued to inspire many across the region.
His obituary describes him as a faithful servant leader who was deeply devoted to his family and the Knoxville community.
Remembered for his kindness, humility and steady presence, Hinkin’s legacy extends far beyond television. For decades, his voice and guidance were a trusted part of daily life for viewers across East Tennessee.
